Winter Storm Warning

* WHAT...Heavy snow mixed with sleet and freezing rain along and south of the Bluegrass and Western Kentucky Parkways. South of the Parkways, storm total snow and sleet of 4 to 8 inches with total ice amounts up to three quarters of an inch. Localized areas may see total ice over three quarters of an inch. Across southern Indiana and north central Kentucky, mainly snow, heavy at times. Total snow accumulations between 10 and 15 inches. Localized higher amounts of snow and sleet possible.

* WHERE...Portions of south central Indiana and east central, north central, northwest, and south central Kentucky.

* WHEN...Until 7 AM EST /6 AM CST/ Monday.

* IMPACTS...Expect power outages and tree damage due to the ice. Travel could be impossible.

Forecast Models are showing an increasing potential for moderate to significant icing starting after midnight through early Sunday afternoon before switching back to heavy snow. These numbers are not exact, more or less freezing rain may fall, this is just an idea of where it could occur. Be prepared for icy road conditions and perhaps some power outages.

* WHAT...For the Cold Weather Advisory, very cold wind chills as low as 10 below expected. For the Extreme Cold Warning, dangerously cold wind chills as low as 10 below to 20 below expected.

* WHERE...Portions of south central Indiana and east central, north central, northwest, and south central Kentucky.

* WHEN...For the Cold Weather Advisory, from midnight EST /11 PM

CST/ tonight to 7 PM EST /6 PM CST/ Monday. For the Extreme Cold Warning, from 7 PM EST /6 PM CST/ Monday to 11 AM EST /10 AM CST/ Tuesday.

* IMPACTS...The cold wind chills as low as 20 below zero could result in hypothermia or frostbite if precautions are not taken.

Dress in layers including a hat, face mask, and gloves if you must go outside.

Use caution while traveling outside. Wear appropriate clothing, a hat, and gloves.

Make frequent checks on older family, friends, and neighbors. Ensure portable heaters are used correctly. Do not use generators or grills inside.

Major Shut Down Winter Storm Saturday-Monday

A significant shut down winter storm is expected tomorrow starting around 2 pm eastern standard time. This storm will cause major disruptions to daily life across a large area. 10 to 15 inches of snow is expected across Central and Northeastern Kentucky. Further South and West, a significant ice storm is expected, power outages are expected.

* WHAT...Heavy snow mixed with sleet and freezing rain along and

or eastern Kentucky could see up to three quarters of an inch.

Significant Winter Storm Threat

There is potential for a significant winter storm this weekend. Crippling snowfall totals leading to major shut downs is likely across portions of the state Saturday through Sunday night as very heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain is expected. The exact placement of the heaviest bands of snow is still wiggling around a bit with forecast models updates.

The National Weather Service states a 60-70% change of exceeding 8 inches and a 30-50% change of exceeded 12 inches. Prepare now for a major Winter Storm and avoid traveling unless absolutely necessary to avoid being stranded on any highways. Take food, water, blankets, and dress appropriately for the cold, snowy weather.
