Update Flash Flood Warning Central KY, Bardstown Flood

 Flash Flood Warning

At 950 AM EDT, local law enforcement reported thunderstorms producing heavy rain and flash flooding across the warned area. Several flooded roadways have been reported in Bardstown this morning, and water has approached some residences in town. Water rescues have also been performed in Bardstown. Between 2 and 4 inches of rain have fallen, with the highest totals generally in Nelson County. Additional rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are possible in the warned area, which will only worsen ongoing flooding.

HAZARD...Life threatening flash flooding. Thunderstorms producing flash flooding.

SOURCE...Law enforcement reported.

IMPACT...Life threatening flash flooding of creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses.

Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Bardstown, New Haven, Greenbrier, Botland, East Bardstown, Withrow, Samuels Field Airport, Balltown, Manton and Bourbon Springs.

Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

 

A Marginal Risk for severe weather is in place as strong storms move through this morning. Additional strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and evening ahead of an approaching cold front.

Cat 4 Hurricane Ida

 All eyes on Hurricane Ida currently a Cat 4 hurricane with 150 mph winds and a pressure of 933 mb as of 8:00 am eastern time. Ida is expected to intensify just a little more before landfall perhaps reaching 155 mph. Ida is about 50 miles away from making official landfall. 

Catastrophic storm surge is expected 12-16 feet in Southeastern Louisiana between Morgan city and mouth of the Mississippi river.

The time has run out to evacuate, you do not want to be stuck in traffic while the Hurricane is making landfall. Shelter in place and be prepared to power outages for long periods of time. The NHC has strong wording mentioning some areas may be unlivable for a period of time.

Please stay tuned to the NHC and the National Weather Service for immediate broadcast.

Ohio Valley 

We will see 6-10 inches of rain by the time Ida reaches our area, at that time Ida will be a Tropical Depression. A hydrological outlook has been issued along with a Moderate Risk for flooding on day 3.

Hot & Humid weather ahead, Special Weather Statement

Temperatures in the mid to perhaps upper 90s will combine with sufficient humidity to produce afternoon heat index values of 100 to 105 degrees at least the next couple of afternoons.

Take extra precautions to prevent heat stress if you work outside or engage in strenuous outdoor activities. Drink plenty of fluids and take breaks in the shade or air conditioning.

Never leave people or pets unattended in a parked vehicle.

Slight Risk for severe storms this afternoon into tonight

Clusters of strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to develop and move through around 3 pm to midnight. The greatest threats are damaging winds, hail, and lightning, especially in the slight risk areas in yellow.

* WHAT...Heat Index values of 105 to 109 degrees expected.

* WHERE...Portions of Central Kentucky and Southern Indiana, mainly west of Interstate 65.

* WHEN...From 1 PM to 8 PM EST.

* IMPACTS...Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur.

A Heat Advisory means that a period of hot temperatures is expected. The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a situation in which heat illnesses are possible. Drink plenty of fluids...stay in an air-conditioned room...stay out of the sun...and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Take extra precautions...if you work or spend time outside. When possible...reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.

To reduce risk during outdoor work...the occupational safety and health administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency...call 9 1 1.

The NWS SPC has issued a Slight and Marginal risk across. Northern Kentucky in yellow stand the greatest chance. 2% chance for brief spin up tornadoes across the slight risk area and a 5% in the Enhanced risk area in orange off the the east coast. Damaging winds will be the primary threat at 15% in the slight risk areas.

Temperatures reaching the lower to mid 90s will combine with high humidity to make it feel like 100 to 105 degrees this afternoon.

Take extra precautions if working or engaging in strenuous activities outside. Drink plenty of fluids and plan rest breaks in a shaded or air conditioned environment.

Model discrepancies

The HRRR model and the NAM 3km model are not yet agreeing on the evolution of these storms. The HRRR model has the storms dissipating as soon as the reach Kentucky while the NAM 3km brings a line of storms through most of the state from north to south.

Smoke from fires raging in central and western North America has spread widely across the continent. Skies have turned hazy in cities ranging from Boston to Washington, D.C., as smoke from fires in Canada’s Manitoba and Ontario provinces poured into the U.S. Northeast.

This map shows the concentration of black carbon particulates—commonly called soot—over North America on July 21, 2021. The black carbon data come from the GEOS forward processing (GEOS-FP) model, which assimilates data from satellite, aircraft, and ground-based observing systems. To simulate black carbon, modelers include satellite observations of aerosols and fires. GEOS-FP also ingests meteorological data like air temperature, moisture, and winds to simulate the plume’s behavior.

Dense plumes of black carbon are also visible streaming from clusters of fires in British Columbia, Oregon, Washington, and California".
